Write Types is a writing critique group for works of all genres. Each meeting, we will discuss the craft of writing and review each other's works. To submit an item for critique, email dpeterson@dconc.gov by April 1. Registered attendees will receive works to review on April 2. Email dpeterson@dconc.gov with questions or to register after registration has closed.

Mingle with local writers as they share their stories, sign copies of their books, and showcase their talents. Authors will have the opportunity to read short excerpts from their books and time will be allotted for individual conversations and networking. Whether you're an aspiring writer or a supporter of great literature, this event is an excellent opportunity to bask in our valuable, vibrant community. About a dozen authors from the "Triangle" will table at this event. Come join us!

Ballet & Books is a national nonprofit organization striving to reduce the literacy gap through the paired storytelling of dance and reading. For ages 6-9 years old. This is program is for children's ages 6-9 years. It includes a ballet class, and a reading and writing mentorship on Saturdays from 12:00 pm-1:30 pm beginning January 24. Join us for ESL classes offered in collaboration with Duke GANO students. GANO, which stands for Gente Aprendiendo Para Nuevas Oportunidades ("People Learning for New Opportunities"), is a student organization at Duke University that provides personalized English instruction. These classes are open to all adults eager to improve their English language skills in a supportive and welcoming environment. Registration is required to participate in these weekly sessions. Participate in the Royal Game of Chess! The Downtown Durham Chess Club meets on selected Saturdays from 1:30-5:30 pm; check the calendar for dates. Menstruation is a natural part of life—but it’s not always a topic everyone feels prepared to talk about. This welcoming and judgment-free program is designed especially for dads, caregivers, and allies who want to better understand and support the people in their lives who menstruate. Participants will learn the basics of menstruation, including what to expect, how to talk about it openly, and how to provide practical and emotional support. We’ll explore common products, answer frequently asked questions, and break down myths and stigmas surrounding periods. Whether you’re a dad wanting to support your child, a caregiver looking to learn, or simply someone who wants to be a better advocate, this session offers the tools, language, and confidence to show up with understanding and care. Let’s turn period prep into a party! Join us for a fun, creative, and welcoming Period Party where participants will design and assemble their own personal period pouches. These handy pouches can be filled with essentials like pads, tampons, wipes, and other comfort items—perfect for keeping in a backpack, locker, or car. While we craft, we’ll also have open, stigma-free conversations about menstruation, body literacy, and how to support ourselves and others with confidence and care. This program is open to anyone who menstruates, supports someone who does, or simply wants to learn more. All supplies will be provided—just bring your creativity! Join the STEAM Team in the Innovation Lab during specified open hours to do paper crafts by creating your own Zine and fold origami! Zines (pronounced "zeens") are tough to define because they can be so many things! Basically, they are self-published booklets containing anything you want - art, writing, drawings, recipes, poetry, comics, etc. The content and look are totally up to the creator. It's all about self-expression. Origami is an ancient art technique to fold paper into exciting and unexpected shapes. This is a self-paced activity. You can drop in during the listed Open Lab Hours. Calling all Pokémon Trainers ages 4-12 years old! Bring your cards and meet up with other fans to show off your collection, trade*, and talk all things Pokémon. Whether you’re a longtime collector or just getting started, this casual meet-up is a fun way to share your love of Pokémon and make new friends. All experience levels welcome! Participants can also make Pikachu corner bookmarks as a fun side activity! *Trading is optional and participant-led with parental/caregiver supervision. With guidance from the local non-profit group, Connecting with Threads, children ages 9 to 12 will learn how to make -- and to personalize -- a quilted block. The pieces will be assembled for exhibition during a presentation with local author and long-time quilter, Frances O'Roark Dowell, the following Saturday (April 25, from 3:00 to 4:00) at Southwest Regional. Each participant will also receive an additional sewing kit with everything needed to make a quilted block at home. *Reservations required. Adult supervision also advised. For ages 9 through 12 ONLY (slots for 20 children available)

The Teen Book Club reads a variety of genres. Books are chosen by teen participants. This is a safe space for all teens to connect and celebrate the freedom to read. The book for this month is Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan!
